Volvo Penta XDP problems

Its about time someone set up a website just to address this chronically bad product.  This website is here to serve as a catalyst for action to force the them to correct the Volvo Penta XDP problems.  Be aware that any and all discussions are being read by someone at Volvo Penta.  We all know that some people have had no problem with their drives but for others the Volvo Penta XDP is a nightmare.  If you have a story to tell, tell it here.  They have to be aware of the misery this is causing people.

I cannot believe they are still in business! This design flaw has cost me over $20k in the last 3 years alone.

The link to the rinkerboatowners site leads the the Chaparral site.

It is a shame that the VP management has conspired to leave the owners of XDP powered boats to their own miserable fate.

What’s your $5000 fix? Funny, my offer was for $16,200! However with the full liability release… HA HA HA I don’t think so. Even if they gave me the drives for free I would never sign a full release of all claims and liability forever. I dread if someone got hurt by a fire or something on one of the engines because of a defect. I would be totally liable alone, and could never drag them into court.

Well this does it for me! I was ready to close on a Formula with
these drives and I am canceling the deal! I have enough issues..
Now I know why Saabs never sell!

  • Nice read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing a little research on that. And he just bought me lunch because I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thank you for lunch! “Life is a continual upgrade.” by J. Mark Wallace.

Wow, this site is a rousing success. Maybe XDP isn’t as bad as you all say. These posting are clueless and certainly portray the posters as a bunch of “no boatin whiners”, LOL

Absolute junk. Transom housing where gimbal bearing goes is junk. Strength of materials ? It should be thicker in critical areas. Boot failed allowing water in . Boot was only 3 years old . has been redesigned at least twice.
Also made in Taiwan . Possibly bad rubber process not getting ozone out of rubber during manufacture allowing it to deteriorate prematurely . Read about Schrader valve stem failure when they outsourced to China.
Also friends 2006 Sx-a boot failed in 49 hrs. How about all the oil pans rotting out and instantly loosing all oil when the dipstick fitting drops out of pan and alarm doesn’t go off because steel connection fails on alarm sender . How about trim cylinders that the rods aren’t grounded or protected by anodes and parts cannot be bought for , or the Fuel Pump cells that fail also only 1 of the two pumps inside are avail and other parts not sold separately. Another real good one is how they change part numbers although a new designed drive or other assembly shared the same part as an older unit. This is done to sell parts and discourage people from buying an aftermarket part or for the aftermarket to catch on that for example : the same bellows on the new Sx -a drive as fits the Cobra or Older Sx drive . I got one for my friend for $11 on eBay and its better than what lasted actually less than 49 hrs . Very crafty and deceptive the greedy corporation is indeed.

I know this is a site for Volvo XDP outdrives, but I’m wondering if anyone has had an issue with the Volvo SX outdrives? I have a 2004 Kayot 21′ bow rider with a 5.0 ltr engine that I purchased brand new. This was the first year Kayot offered this boat (my first mistake, buying a first year model). I have experienced all of the issues that have been described for the XDP on my SX outdrive. I’ve had to replace the gimbal bellows and gimbal bearing 4 times. The first time was during the second season I owned the boat, and was told it was not covered in the warranty. Last week, I experienced a catastrophic gimbal failure that caused much collateral damage. I’m told I’m looking at a $5000.00 repair at least. Has anyone experienced this with any other Volvo SX drives? Any information or insight would be greatly appreciated.
